Camp Security- York, PA

Camp Security is the only remaining undeveloped prisoner-of-war camp from the Revolutionary War. One of only a handful to ever be established, it is located East of York, PA in what is now Springettsbury Township. Built in 1781 to detain British troops surrendered at Saratoga, NY, and later prisoners captured in Yorktown, VA. The camp consisted of log huts and a large stockade. Camp Security housed over one-thousand British and Canadian prisoners of war between the summer of 1781 and spring of 1783.

Friends of Camp Security, founded in 1999, is a non-profit organization that works to preserve Camp Security through sponsorship of archeological digs and production of educational resources to increase public knowledge of the site. Since 1999, the Friends of Camp Security have fought to stop land development of the important historic site.

During the 1979 archaeological dig, a Weeping Heart Brooch was found at the Camp Indulgence section of the Camp Security Site. Weeping heart pins were given to Scottish soldiers as a farewell token and thought to offer protection to the wearer. The weeping heart is used in the logo of the Friends of Camp Security and Digging History with PA C.A.R.

State Project– To raise funds to assist Friends of Camp Security to provide educational documents, brochures, reports, and supplies to assist with the archaeological dig and preservation of Camp Security in York, PA.

Goals for the 2025-2026 Term

  • Why This Project – Preserving and protecting this crucial site is vital to American history. The camp holds significant information under the soil that may give light to how life was back during the Revolutionary War. By raising funds for Camp Security, we can make sure that one day, future generations can visit the site and possibly even see a reconstruction of the camp. But first, they must go dig by dig to uncover the land. That’s where we come in, making this dig possible so many more can come after.
  • Project Goals
  • This project will focus on the following standing committees: American History, Veterans, Patriotic Education, Conservation, and Public Relations
  • To teach our members to understand the importance of historic preservation of key Revolutionary War sites.
  • To teach our members to understand what soldiers, especially prisoners of war, go through, their service, and to respect their sacrifices.
  • Administration Goals
  • Spread the word about C.A.R. to increase membership
  • Make all members feel included and welcomed
  • Increase interaction with DAR, SAR, SR and other Revolutionary War societies and groups
  • Have older members become mentors to younger members
  • Increase local Society participation through joint events and other activities
  • Increase participation with other State Societies
